So, I got a new dirt box, and decided to see if anyone can guess what it is. I recorded this clip with my Stingray HS, into my FEA Dual Band comp (used as a low shelving eq, beefing up the low end to make it easier to hear how the dirt handles low frequencies), then into the mystery box, then into a firewire interface, then Garage Band, and now through your speakers. Here are a few clues as to what the pedal might be:
1. It is not designed for bass. In other words, this is a guitar pedal.
2. It has gotten very little talk on these boards.
3. To my knowledge, no one has done any clips of this on bass (certainly none I could find anywhere).
4. The manufacturer advertises it as a distortion (not an overdrive, not a fuzz).
5. No blending, post-eq, cross-over, or any other tricks were used--this is the pedal only.
6. The settings for the pedal in the clip are about middle of the road on all parameters (including gain). So, what's the dirt?

The gate was not on in the clip (the gate works well, though, and at its loosest kills the hiss and feedback while still letting notes sustain for a long time--then, if you tighten it up a bit, you can get very hard-gated sounds). Also, the settings in the clip do not reflect how I have it set for personal use--I've maxed the bass, bumped the mids, rolled back the treble a little bit and cranked the gain (yes, max gain), which sounds very pleasing (to me) through my amp. If I had a decent way to record the sound through my amp, I would, but alas I do not. Anyway, I wanted to show how this pedal is relatively bass friendly, since I doubt I'm the only one around here looking for crazy levels of distortion.

I've been curious about this one on bass, but wasn't willing to take that financial plunge w/o knowing what the bass response was like.
Sounds awesome btw. |

I was going to guess the Dunlop JH-OC1 Jimi Hendrix Octavio Pedal. |

Watch the levels going into your interface. There was a little bit of clipping on the clean sample, which always makes the dirty samples a bit more suspect |

| | I hate. | | Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: The state of denial. | | No clipping in there (I double-checked through cans), that's just how my bass sounds (aggressive) with the way I play (aggressively).
I did a couple more quick clips with the Box of Metal, set up more to how I use things personally (bass, eq, settings on the Zvex, et cetera): This clip was done with my HS Stingray set up the way I prefer (position 4 on the selector switch), into my FEA Dual Band comp set up for evenness as well as a shelving boost below 220 Hz (or so), then into the Box of Metal with Bass at 3 o'clock, mids at 1:30, and treble rolled off, gain is at 3:45, gate is on and is at its loosest. I play clean first, then with the Box of Metal. I also stomp off the gate at the end to let the note sustain and to show the silent switching. And this other clip was done using my FEA Dual Band comp as a crossover. First clean, then the same settings as above, but with the frequencies below 220 Hz (or so) left clean. Then, I run the crossover frequency from 80 Hz up to 1k Hz and back down again. Finally, I do the same thing, but with the lows totally bypassed, so all you hear are the frequencies above the crossover point being distorted. For the rolling crossover parts, I left the gate off, since it would choke off the notes at the highest end of the crossover.
