Heavy Electronics - Red Eyes (Info and Clips)

Sign in to disble this ad
You ever just surf the web, see a pedal, and for whatever reason decide you want it without even hearing it?

One night cruising Pedalgeek.com (is that geeky?) I came across Heavy Electronics and their Red Eyes pedal. My TB research revealed some information on the company, but nothing on the pedal. I bought it anyway.

The pedal sounded great with the tone knob turned all the way counter-clockwise (all bass). However, as soon as I turned the knob just a touch clockwise, all bass was lost. This was just fine for guitar and actually sounded great. But for bass, well . . . .

I contacted the company to see what could be done. Although the pedal isn't marketed to bass players, the website says it is opened voiced for all instruments. They got back to me and said to send them the pedal and they would rework it for me. I received the pedal about a week later.

Although I haven't had a chance to try it out at practice, the pedal sounds great on my practice rig. I intend to post some pics and do a more detailed review later this week. By then, I will have used the pedal at practice and I'm giving it a shot at our gig on Thursday. In the meantime, three quick clips have been posted in my link. Enjoy.

nice clips, It sounds like a really fat low-gain fuzz.

What sort of market level pricing are we looking at?

I dont know what your current uses are for fuzzes ODs, but how does it sit with you? On my board i've got a definite 'heavy raging Tube amp' sounding OD (Tech 21 Leeds), a fat all purpose fuzz (modified Myrtle Pedals Corvid tonebender clone) and my vicious trebly-fuzz-mixed-with-clean-lows for abrasive fuzz/distortion/feedback (Musket + SFX X&M crossover) and my synth-fuzz (blowtorch).

obviously ill admit that i probably use more drive sounds on my board than many players, but I dont know if its low enough gain to replace an OD or high enough gain to replace my regular fuzzes.

When you've given it a go with the band, please let us know how it sounds in the mix

Thanks. I haven't had a lot of time to mess with the pedal. The first two clips definitely have a really fat sound to them. That's because I had the tone turned pretty much all the way to the bass side. In my mind I consider the pedal more of an overdrive and intend to use it as an always on pedal for that little bit of dirt. I think it does have the ability to get that trebly fuzz sound. I tried to represent this somewhat in the third clip. I really just need to do some more clips for all of you to see what it can do.

The pedal was $149.99 from Pedalgeek. They didn't charge anything to voice the pedal for bass. I think that's their policy.

I don't use fuzzes alot but I always have some sort of OD on. Lately, I've been using the Dredge-Tone Angler and the Crowther Hot Cake. I love the sound of both and go back and forth. You've definitely got things covered with the fuzz, etc. I'm not sure if the Red Eyes would be redundant for you or if it may have its own little niche. I just need to do some more clips for you.

Personally, I'll use this for just a little bit of dirt. I'll see how it stacks up against the Angler and Hot Cake on Wednesday (Practice) and Thursday (Gig). I plan on turning the tone a little more to the treble side than is in those first two clips. I like the fat sound standing alone, but it could easily get lost in the mix. A little more treble should help with that.
