help dailing in EBS Multicomp

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys...just picked up a Multicomp and liking it so far. My question is what method most of you are using to dial the right amount of compression for your sound.

This is what I've done so far:
-set the gain at unity or just slightly above
-adjusted the trimpots (low at 4 o'clock. high maxed) to give me a threshold that kicks in pretty quickly on the highest settings of the comp/limit knob and more dynamically in the 12+ o'clock setting when digging in. (this is using the glow if the LED as a reference)

Some issues so far:
-In the Tubism mode, the highs roll off way too aggressive at the higher comp ratios. I like the general tone though in the moderate ratio range when it's not causing un-natural sounds.
-same roll-off thing in the normal setting but to a more tolerable degree
-Multiband mode seems to not engage at all except under the heaviest of spikes.

For reference, I'm playing a stock SX PJ with the comp first in the chain and followed by a Bass Driver.

You'll want to adjust the trimpots inside, to match your levels. For example if you raise the threshold on the high band then (in multiband mode) it won't squash your highs so much. Instructions for the trimpots are on the instruction sheet, which is also available for download on the EBS site.

as far as I can tell I have it set with the threshold ultra low on the high band and it's not kicking in at all?

how much should I consider tweaking according to the LED?

Well, one thing is the highs are often not as strong as the lows, so they are less likely to cross the threshold. As a test, try really popping the high string, or playing a big chord, see if you get any response. Also try turning the threshold pot all the way to the other end, in case there was any misunderstanding about the direction needed.
