Help - Don't know the name of the type of pedal I am describing.

Are there any pedals that will negate any spikes in sound?

For example, if I have multiple pedals plugged in, is there some separate sort of box that I can plug in last that will take any surges or spikes in sound (like a surge protector, except for the actual bass sound, not electrical power) so that way when I am messing with effects I wont accidentally overload my head and/or speakers?

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

A compressor or a limiter/enhancer will do what your looking for!

The function you are describing is called a limiter. It is a specialized type of compressor that has a very high compression ratio to tame volume spikes. The Boss LMB-3 is a good basic limiter for cheap $$$, although there are better ones out there that cost a bit more. Definitely check out the link someone else posted above.
