Help getting distorted bass tones ala Head of David/Shellac/Big Black/etc....

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay Ive been trying and trying to nail the gritty bass sound of David Cochrane of Head of David/God/Sweet Tooth/Ice/Jesu/etc with my Acoustic B200H rig..
If ya check out their myspace here http://www.myspace.com/headofdavidofficial and listen to the track Bugged on the mp3 player (its the last one).. That bass in the intro, THATS IT.

Ive tried pedals (were currently using a Boss HM-2) but they just dont work.. Theyre more fuzz then 'grind'.. Is this just a gnarly amp being overdriven or what?? Funny enough I actually know Dave Cochrane but he always likes to change the subject when I ask him about his old tones haha. I got him to give up some info once when the band Jesu was out on tour over here last year but we were all trashed and well you know how memory goes.

Ive tried cranking the gain and volume on my Acoustic B200H but it does NOT overdrive like an amp should. Gets more farty and has this nasty ass 'Im a clean solid state amp being pushed too hard so Im just gonna crap out my sound' sound to it..

Any suggestions? Or should I just wish I had an old SVT to turn up to 11??

Try a Sansamp, or some other valve type overdrive, but yes, it's a tube amp cranked that gets that sound.

Damn now that I think about it, Im such a packrat I bet that email is still sitting in there!!
Gotta go look now haha!

Have you seen the Tronographic Rusty Box? http://www.tronographic.com/ It's more Bob Weston flavored than David Cochrane flavored, but it might suit you.

Ooooo awesome.. Bob Weston is just as nice..
Westons tone on At Action Park is awesome and in the very same vein of what im looking for. Cochrane just seems a little 'louder' but sonically pretty damn similar..

Sounds like scooped mids too, classic cool metal tone that gets lost once any other instrument starts playing

Soounds like you are dealing with more of an Effects issue than an Amps one so I'm going to send this thread over there. Good luck getting that sound!

I couldn't tell you the source of that sound, but that's a sweet John Birch bass in the pics gallery.
