Help! I need to get a Metal Sound!

Sorry if this is a repost, or if this question has already been answered on another thread. If so, please direct me towards it.

2 Questions:

1) I'm trying to get a really heavy grungey sound, and I don't know what to do. I want it to sound similiar to Norma Jean from their cd Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child or In Flames in their cd Come Clarity. A fairly clear example here: www.myspace.com/normajean check out the song Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste at around 2 and a half minutes. Or www.myspace.com/inflames in the song Take This Life (And I'm sorry, I know it's cliche.)

2) I saw that the bass player from Atreyu (which I don't like, by the way) uses a Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler on his Bass. I was listening a little bit, and I can't get a clear idea of how it sounds. How do you all think it would sound?

Thanks For Any Help!
Matt

Sounds like you want a Sansamp.

Yep. I use one of them for metal and it's fantastic. You can dial up some very overdriven grungy sounds with it.

Interested as well.
Whenever I read about the sansamp (I assume the standard BDDI) it is always mentioned that there are scooped mids which is problematic when trying to cut-through the mix along with all those distorted guitars. Any additional inputs regarding this issue?

I presonally think a good metal sound can be had with lots of mids between 300-900hz some hi mids around 1.5-2.5hz and a little transparent overdrive (not distortion of fuzz although they can be metal too) and you can have a very grindy inflames like tone

ya, i use sansamp rbi with drive at about 3-5 o clock, with mids boosted a tad and treble rolled off a tad, with presence at like 9 o clock

gives me a very heavy, metal tone.

Hey, thank you guys very much!

by the way, does anyone have any idea about how a Line 6 DM4 Distortion Modeler would sound on Bass?

i recommend a fulltone bass drive, either with or without mosfet. Mine doesnt have mosfet and i like it just fine. You can get a really abbrasive grit out of it which is what i use for metal, and i play in Drop C so it helps me punch even more. Use can also get full blow distortion but i dont think thats what your looking for, i use that setting for soloing over loops from my DL-4 when im messin around

BTW go to the techniques forum and theres a sticky there about metal. How to improove your s technique, and how to eq your amp.

in order to cut through the mix, mids are the way to go. no doubt about it.
