I'd say your best bet would be in the effects forum, but whats your bass and amp set up?

If you're trying to sound like Clifford Lee "Messiah of the metal bass" Burton, you either gonna go trying a lot of effect pedals...
or just exactly copy the gear Cliff used.
I've been there...
I still haven't find the right distortion or fuzz pedal.
Try asking the specialists in the effect forum.
Best of luck.
Cliff Burton was the greatest of them all. |

all i used was a BOSS ODB-3 bass overdrive.
flat settings on my active jazz bass by ESP with both pups blended.
OD knob up only a quarter from dry.
flat EQ on pedal.
thats all i remember

The Ibanez Phat Hed doesn't do it for me.
Looking forward to hear your experiences with the HyperDrive. |

| | | | The fuzz/distortion isn't nearly as important as people make it out to be. His wah pedal, IIRC and old Morley Power Wah, was responsible for a lot of his sound as was his technique, particularly his open-palmed slapping of his bass and how he scraped the strings with his fingernails when he played chords. |

Also, unless the distortion pedal has a natural "half-open wah" tone, no distortion or fuzz pedal can do it alone.
At minimum, you'll NEED to buy a wah pedal, or you'll never get close.
Having owned and used the old chrome Morley wah pedals (which Cliff Burton used), the closest-sounding one in production today would be the Morley Power Wah, IMO. So... get one.

In my first days of playing bass, I aspired to be like Cliff.
But I couldn't and still can't play with a wah pedaL
To compensate I started fretless bass, so I can bring more expression in my (metal) playing.
I don't want to be like Cliff anymore. (Although I still think he was and is the best.)
I am at a stage where I found my own style. |
