Although it's not a bass, I figured you guys could help me out.
That distortion... it's heavenly! I could float away on it...
Anyways, you guys think you could help a brother out?

The only distortion pedals I've ever known of Fripp using is a Muff and Rat. That's a great video, Fripp is one of the most amazing musicians EVER!

Fripp has used various fuzz boxes in his early career similar in style to Muff style fuzz units.
He suggests that his fuzzes are not as good as the current production muffs.

In interviews he has specifically mentioned the Big Muff, Foxey Lady, Buns Buzzaround and the ColorSound Fuzz units.
These days he uses the Fernandez sustainer pickup a lot I've heard,
& all sorts of hi tech gear..
midi, guitar synths ,Eventide, etc

I'd probably go with any good Muff or Rat, turn the gain up full,
even the Pork Loin is mega-creamy on high gain..Humbuckers are a must ,
roll back the tone knob a touch,
& standing near the cabinet helps.

Try keeping a Crybaby Classic in the chain, with the pedal activated and cocked back towards the lower reg, held in a fixed position.
Sustain a note and experiment w finding a sweet spot, where it sustains like a champ, and has a hollow, throaty quality.
Zappa did that a lot.

It sounds like he's constantly changing the amplitude of the first eight partials in the harmonic series.
