Help me decide on a delay (around 200$)

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for a delay around 200$ and need help deciding on which one to buy (and yes I searched before the search nazis come around.)

Pedals I'm looking at:

Boss DD-6
Akai Headrush (E2)
Ibanez or Maxon AD9
Line-6 DL4

If you have any other suggestions let me know.

Among my next purchases will be a DL-4 (which is what I'm assuming your referencing, as the DM-4 is the Dist. Pedal) and an expression pedal to join it. After trying one out in a store, I'm in love. Lots of versatility, great tone, presets, tap tempo, etc. Its even fairly reasonably priced.

Guyatone TD-X Tube Echo is supposed to be pretty cool. Also, I heard good things from a buddy of mine about the Marshall Echohead

What are the main differences between the DL4 and the Headrush?

Having never played a Headrush, I'm really not fit to compare, but from an outside view, I'd say the DL-4 has the Headrush beat on features. So many different delay modes, including multiple settings with modulation, and reverse delay, plus a looper, just like the Headrush (The DL-4's is only 14 seconds, though). Unless your really going to make use of 35 seconds of looping and/or the 4 Head Tape simulation on the Akai, I'd definatly go DL-4.

Hmm, interesting. I have only heard good things about the DL4 and am currently leaning towards that but the headrush still seems interesting unless someone can talk me out of it.

I dunno if the Headrush has presets. But the DL-4 does and it also has an easy to use tap tempo.

I really dig the hold function, tap tempo and size of the DD6. Or go the extra step and get a Boss RC20XL Loop station. Even though that isnt a delay, youll learn an awful lot. Who needs friends when you can jam with yourself?!
The DL-4 is Line 6. (bleh..) its bigger and flimsier but is still very cool.
The analog AD9 just sounds ok but eh you can do better with options for your money.

It depends on what you really want. If long delay time a factor, have a gander at this:

Boss DD-20 or Boss RE-20.

I've always loved the DD-20's I've had

Well the Headrush can also be used as a looper too.

The entire Boss DD series is fantastic. Also, the price of the DD-20 came down a while ago to around $200, maybe even a little under. You can definitely loop with that, plus it has presets and tap tempo and a few weird Boss goodies like warp mode.

The RE-20 is also a blast to play.

That said, +1 to the Headrush as well -- it's like the RE-20 in some ways (simulated multiple tape heads) but it's more directly controllable, has more features and is cheaper. No reverb or twist function though.

I haven't liked the DL4 when I've tried them out -- I've always had a hard time with digital dials.

What, no mention of the new EHX Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai?

It's an awesome digital delay pedal with modulation, programmable presets, and tap tempo that's well worth checking out, and can be easily found under $200.

I know, I know... I'm throwing another choice on your plate. But hey, you might like it.

I've found the SMMH to be more flexible than the DD-6 in an A/B comparison.

I've been thinking about a new delay as well, and am going to check out the "TC Electronic Nova Delay". I have heard these are great, but haven't had a chance to play with one yet. They sell for around $250, which conpared to other delays in this price range ain't too bad.

These are all good opinions but to me the DD-20 never seemed too user friendly.
The EHX 16 Second Digital Delay is awesome in its features! Im surprised nobody has brought it up.

+1 for the Ehx SMMH. Awesome pedal, and lot's of programmable presets, plus 30 sec of loop time, and crazy good reverse.

My brother just bought one of these for use with guitar and it is pretty awesome. A great sounding delay.

Check out the Guyatone MD-3. GREAT tone, does a lot and can be had for less than $100.00. I prefer it over the considerably higher priced delays.
