help me downsize

Sign in to disble this ad
i hate to admit it, but running all my effects all the time is simply not realistic. i need to downsize to a reasonable size board, maybe 6ish pedals? i keep trying to decide for myself, but to me each one of my pedals is "crucial." that being said, i fairly often go to gigs without any pedals at all, so i can live without any given thing, i just dont want to. heres the pedalboard, in its entirety..

boss OC-2
zvex machine
korg G5 synth
dunlop 535 Q crybaby
digitech whammy
electroniX messdrive (not hybrid)
DOD FX25 envelope filter
devi ever hyperion fuzz
visual sound jekyll and hyde
3 channel sansamp BDDI
red witch moon phaser
analogman minichorus
boss rv-3 reverb/delay
korg AX3000b multi-effects (used mostely for delays/volume pedal currently..)
boss rc-20XL loop station

some of these pedals are useless without their counterparts (ie, the machine is semi-useless without another dirt pedal after ..) but regardless, if you were me, which handful of pedals would you put on your board?

The RV-5 is a reverb and delay? I was aware that the RV-3 was...

Well there's 2 for the price/space of one- I'd keep it.

what kind of music do you play?

start by keeping the basics.....evelope filter, chorus or phaser, dirt or fuzz, one synth, one delay.

I'd keep the SansAmp, the Boss OC-2, either the FX25 or the wah - having two pedals that do similar stuff is somewhat redundant, so for variety i'd prolly keep the wah - the Boss RV-3, either the Chorus or the Phaser - which ever one is more practical to you, and then one of the 4 dirt pedals you have (not including the sansamp). If you just wanna use the sansamp for all your dirt tones, then trade out that final dirt pedal for a different one of your choice.

Given that choice of pedals:

boss OC-2 or digitech whammy
dunlop 535 Q crybaby or DOD FX25 envelope filter
electroniX messdrive (not hybrid) or devi ever hyperion fuzz
red witch moon phaser or analogman minichorus
boss rv-3 reverb/delay

For the either/or choices it's up to your personal preferences.

I'd maybe keep the 3 channel sansamp BDDI off the board for going direct.

You've got a fair amount of dirt and modulation overlap there. You might want that much variety for a recording but in a live situation most of the nuances between them will be lost.

I don't know which you prefer but I'd decide on:

1) dirt
2) modulation
3) whammy
4) octave
5) wah/filter
6) loop/delay/reverb

My pick of your pedals:

boss OC-2
dunlop 535 Q crybaby
devi ever hyperion fuzz
3 channel sansamp BDDI
analogman minichorus
boss rv-3 reverb/delay

the band that this board will be for is psychedelic funk/rock/jamband/ anything goes.

so far the only thing everyone seems to agree on is the OC-2, wich isint a bad idea..i can leave off the G5 for now if i use the oc-2 with fuzz and stuff for my synth sounds.

for rehearsal tonight im going to try-

oc-2
535q wah
whammy
messdrive
red witch phase
rv-3 delay/verb

the only thing i think that would really be lacking with that is not having the hyperioin, because its so differnt from the messdrive.. but i can always leave my wah on at the top of the sweep to get a more agressive tone from the messdrive..

hopefully nothing will be lacking without my other bells and whistles.. (no envelope filter, korg synth, chorus..)

thanks for everyones input. ill see how this works.

I've just done the same thing, again. Pedals are habit forming, to say the least. Anyway, got rid of one board, and several pedals, even a few I really liked. But I gave myself a challenge, keep the PT-2 and whatever I could fit on it. Turned out to be 11 pedals total, a very reasonable sized set up for a bass player, I think. Play with what you have, and make your choices well, it's not an easy task.

haha, doesent it break your heart to sell a pedal you like?

as of now im not actually using a board. im just picking a handfull of pedals and bringing them to the gig.

wont actually decide on what sized board to build untill im sure of a "small pedal setup"

Here's my solution...if you're into investing a bit into making a few boards...that you can add onto your main board at home or remove for portability.

You have more than you'd need (really...we're bass players...bass into amp...plug in and thump.) but enough to get a wide range of usable tones.

You'd also have the opportunity to scale back really easily. It's a great thing to be able to do.

Main Board:

boss OC-2
***Insert Point(for dirty board)
visual sound jekyll and hyde
dunlop 535 Q crybaby
DOD FX25 envelope filter
analogman minichorus
***Insert Point (for synthy space board)
boss rc-20XL loop station
D.I/out.

Dirty Board:

digitech whammy
zvex machine
electroniX messdrive (not hybrid)
devi ever hyperion fuzz

Synthy Space Board:

korg G5 synth
boss rv-3 reverb/delay
red witch moon phaser
korg AX3000b multi-effects (used mostely for delays/volume pedal currently..)

To answer your question though...

If I had your gear here's what my board would look like...

boss OC-2
visual sound jekyll and hyde
dunlop 535 Q crybaby
DOD FX25 envelope filter
analogman minichorus
boss rv-3 reverb/delay
red witch moon phaser
boss rc-20XL loop station

And Scaled back even more (cause it's good to do that sometimes...

visual sound jekyll and hyde
dunlop 535 Q crybaby
boss rv-3 reverb/delay
analogman minichorus
boss rc-20XL loop station

after messing around with a few setups, at todays rehearsal i was running-

535Q wah
whammy
messdrive
DOD filter
hyperion fuzz

even though i had no delays or modulation or even my synth, i was really happy with it. this might be the final setup, with maybe the oc-2 added.
