Hey guys, I'm an effects noob so be kind

Thinking of buying myself a new overdrive, seeing as my Behringer one broke I'm not sure if I want an overdrive, distortion or fuzz yet. I'm leaning away from the fuzz and more towards the other two though, but, as I said I'm an effects noob. I want something that can nail this tone:

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Im not sure why you want to fight the distortion, but I would suggest;

Boss ODB-3
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...dal?sku=151396

MXR Blow Torch
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...rch?sku=151124

Tech 21 XXL Bass
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...arp?sku=151800

GK Diesel Dawg
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...dal?sku=150370

These will all give a nice overdrive/distortion that you can tweak to get a sound similar to that video. And all of those pedals are obtainable and work great with bass. I would favor the Boss ODB-3, however many people on TB bash it.

I love my Tech 21 XXL. It gets wild fuzz very similar to the EHX Microsynth, but it remains controllable. It also retains the low end very well, which I haven't seen in too many other fuzzboxes.

The tone in the video is largely a product of the sound coming from that bass, so don't expect to nail that exact tone, but you should be able to find the right pedal and get a similarly tight distortion sound. I've posted sound samples on this forum to several distortion boxes, so if you want do a search for threads posted by me and most of them will have sound samples for you to check out, maybe get some ideas of what you do/don't want.

Dunno if it's been suggested(I'm skimming )but I love my Guyatone Flip Series Bass Driver. Sweet real tube tone, very versatile & you can keep as much straight signal in as you like. A bit pricey(for my cheap ass)but they pop up used now & then. Before that I used a Dano Daddy-O, also very nice- and much cheaper.

Well you did say you're leaning away from fuzz but the Colorsound Tonebender seems to be a favorite of TBers.

Other people seem to like these too:

EH Big Muff
MXR bass blowtorch
Boss ODB-3
ProCo Rat (II, Turbo...etc.)

Just some suggestions, kind of depends on your price range.

The closest to a Pete Steele sound (without 2 amps) is to use a blender pedal with a Metal Zone + DD-3 + CE-5 combination.

i think the ashdown drive plus is one of the best out there for bass overdrive, its definitely not a fuzz; but you can get a really good blend of your clean and dirty signal because its got a blender on it. A great pedal that is subtle or crazy when you need it and you can keep it on alot of the time for an extra boost in your tone.

Peter Steele used a Boss Hyper Metal, Boss Reverb and Boss Chorus most of the time... That sound he is getting in that clip does sound pretty 'hyper metally' Mind you'll have a bit of trouble finding a hyper metal these days

First of all, thank you to everyone who left a helpful reply.

TheButler- I found a Hyper Metal for sale in a store that is about 30 minutes away from me, I might pick that one up. I know where I can get the Reverb and Chorus from too. I tried finding out what effects he used, but couldn't get any info! Thanks for the help.

Assboglin- Yup, the key to his tone is mostly his bass, it sounds so unique! I wish I new what it was, I love the tone he gets out of that thing.
