Help me ID this OD

Sign in to disble this ad
I really dig the distortion in this video, but haven't gotten a reply on what kind of OD he's using on his tone. I know it's the clean mixed with the OD but I rarely ever use OD (although now I'm going to GAS after whatever suggestions you guys come up with...). If we can't figure out exactly what it is I'd just like an OD that comes close to the sound of that.

So, help please?

Tech21 XXL bass with the gain low will get you very close.

IMO you need an active bass to get that sound though.

Sounds like a VT Bass or a SFT to my ears if we're going for pedals. However, i think it's just his amp with some gain. Also, you're going to need an active bass with bright rounds on it.

How about something like the Agro? I've watched a few videos on that and it sounds pretty good. I don't know nearly enough about distortion. =/

I've owned the Agro, VT, and SFT. While it does have a very cool sound, it's not that hot for low gain IMHO. The VT or SFT are much better in that department while also giving you control over the tone, which the Agro doesn't really let you do.

Sorry, I know the VT, but what's the SFT? Not familiar with that abbreviation.

I'm looking for low gain for sure?

AFAIK (As Far As I Know ) SFT isn't an abbreviation.

It's another Ampeg-type modeler pedal made by Catalinbread.

Also, yes definitely a more low gain than high gain which can compress your signal and turn it to mush. You need strong note articulation if that is the tone you are after.

According to this guy's youtube clip, he's using an aguilar obp-1 preamp with a overdrive that's blended through his eden-traveller amp. I think you could get the same results with an aguilar agro overdrive pedal. also this guy is playing a schecter riot 6-string bass. it sounds super punchy.

Sounds to me he's going active bass with highs cranked, mids flat and low rolled off. Then hard scoop on the amp with high gain.

His bass may also be too hot for the recorder to take clean, so it's overdriven with the signal thats coming in.

Or... it could be bass slightly boosted with mids and highs rolled off and this pedal. I had one. Hated it. Sold it.

Edit: The post above me posted while I was writing. I stand corrected.
