Whoever can tell me what effect this is (on bass obv.) is my hero.
Seriously
He uses this thing in almost half his songs, I can't tell if it's an envelope or some sort of wah or what.
Help!
If you have to DL the plugin it's made by windows and it's harmless.
Thanks!!!!!! http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/wind...7-WMLO,00.html |

I know he uses a Warwick Streamer Stage II.
And An SWR 750x........ |

My girlfriend's a big 311 fan, and I've been to a recent 311 concert. IIRC, he rarely uses effects - he usually plays fingerstyle, but will also slap from time to time.
If you want that sound, now would be the time to start learning a new technique for bass playing!

It's not helped by the woeful bitrate, but I'm not hearing anything that could be bought in pedal form and just stomped on. That's just how his rig sounds!

What do you think about the first version of the signature? The one made of french walnut......I like it more, I may get one. |

You could start by trying different strings - it'll help significantly with your sound and technique. Perhaps the strings you're using are working against you for this sound.
Also... when I saw him live, he was playing that Streamer, and his rig consisted of a heck of a lot of SWR 8x10 cabinets (Megoliath, I think?).
As for EQ... I don't slap, so it's not really something I can give good advice on. Perhaps you should consider boosting the low mids and dialing down the highs a bit? Or maybe scooping the mids?

It's got purple heart and all kinds of bling going on. But, I'd settle for the above!

I'm guessing he either OD'd the board or his preamp to get that sound. I can get close on my 'wick if I hit the strings really hard.

There's definately three different pre-amps and a bifilter on there, if i can see correctly. |

Then again, you couldn't really hear his tone too well that night... maybe it was the venue acoustics or something, but the two other bands (Dirty Heads, Matisyahu) were pretty clear on every instrument.

I don't know if it's a very subtle filter or just the way he plays sometimes but I'm glad that someone besides me notices it....

But I'd agree that it's probably just some mad fat slapping. Try raising your gain, scooping the high mids a bit and boosting the lows and highs. Also, if you're not getting the slap tone that you want from your strings like Boo said, you might want to try something else. Personally, I like DR Hi-Beam stainless steel round cores, but YMMV. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
