Question Help with my live tone.

Sign in to disble this ad
A couple of days ago i played a small show with my VT BASS DELUXE and BASS Big muff connected to my amp. I thought it sounded pretty good but some other bass players in the crowd pointed out that some notes sounded louder than others and that they could hear alot of grind and clicking in between notes. The lead guitarist also pointed out that he could hear the buzz noise coming out of my cab. After reading about 5 threads on compressors and limiters im still kind of confused on what i need. Any suggestions?

What you just described is basically a Big Muff tone, what were you expecting?

Turn the tone knob all the way down. That will smooth out your sound without loosing distortion and grind.

I dont have the bbm on all the time. Its mostly coming from the VT. Is there any way of getting rid of all the static and excess noise without cutting back on VT?

Yep, your problem is tone. The VT can certainly create clankiness if you ask for it. I don't have experience with the Big Muff, but fuzzes in general can do a number on your tone as well. Compressors/limiters deal with dynamics, not equalization/tone, so you're barking up the wrong tree there. You likely have all the knobs at your disposal to fix your problem, you just need to learn how to use them.

Turn your character and treble knobs down, especially as you boost the gain.

I'd conjecture that what sounds good to you on stage does not, in fact, sound that good out in the house. It's a fine balance between adding definition with your mids/highs and overdoing it such that you don't sit well in the band mix. Some people lean some way, some the other, but if it's way out of whack people will notice and tell you, like you experienced.

I had a situation where some of my notes were sounding louder than others. I realised that it was because my EQ settings were too severe. Set any EQ you have FLAT, and see if the problem gets better. Then go from there.

turn off your tweeter. if you dont have one, turn down the high knob. the VT models the SVT with the ultra hi on. from there, if you still have noise, its technique. i have this problem because i crank my high mids and play extremely hard fingerstyle. not always so consistent.

often times this is covered up in a band setting. which is good and bad. you wont hear it in practice, but when you're close miced, there are no secrets.

always get your live tone by putting your ear to the speaker, not listening standing in front of it.

Remember the treble knob of VT bass is boost only in reality.
I think I've seen it on a review in this forum.

Yea the character nob is to high up. Its sounds good but when I crank my amp that's when you start hearing all the extras... hmm I guess the the more volume i put the more i have to cut the high and character.
