Question Help a noob...

Sign in to disble this ad
I would like to get a compressor pedal for extra sustain and also I'm interested in an "anti-noise" type of pedal, my guitarist has one and it's really good for cutting out humming and accidental harmonics. I was thinking if I go bass>anti-noise>compressor>amp, I could then turn the compressor up a lot, and the anti-noise up a little, cutting some of the horrible noise associated when you turn up a comp. pedal.

Thing is, I know nothing about pedals or pedal manufacturers. Would this even work? What pedals/pedal manufacturer would you advise? (this is probably like asking what bass to buy) And any other advise is appreciated.

Sorry for the noobness guys.

Check out http://www.ovnilab.com/index.shtml for compressor advice. As for noise control pedals I don't know anything. My strategy has always been to avoid noise in the first place rather than try to remove it with a pedal.

I would reccomend the Boss NS-2 for noise reduction and the BBE Opto-Stomp compressor for an affordable combo that will do the job well!

If you're getting noise from a compressor, get a different compressor. If you're getting humming noise, that's harder to diagnose but it's the sort of thing you should be able to eliminate by fixing some aspect of your setup instead of masking it with a noise gate (unless you're getting it from a fuzz pedal or something). If you're getting "accidental harmonics" you can fix those with your hands.

I would suggest the ISP Decimator for noise gating. Silent, easier to use than the Boss NS-2, looks more snazzy.

For compression, I use and LOVE the Demeter Opto Compulator. Look into this on Bongo's page (linked above).

That's the sort of thing I thought before I heard my guitarist's anti-noise, it's just so much easier than 'not making noise'. It's hard to explain but it's really cool, it cuts out like the very faint noise that muting the strings with your left hand makes, sliding your fingers along the strings, and you know when you turn up your amp real loud and you mute the strings then let go of them and they vibrate just a tiny bit? Yeah it's that sort of stuff. You gotta at least try one man.
