Help Putting a Pedalboard Together

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys, I am wanting to put together a small pedalboard for my church gig. A little background; my church has a killer sound system; audio/video the works. It's a "clean" stage with amps off stage and I'm running direct. I've never used a pedalboard for bass gigs; only for guitar. I have just purchased a Bassbone (thanks ric) to be my "central command" so that I can use 2 basses (with levels adjusted) and I can loop effects.

I'll be using a small pedalboard like a Pedaltrain Jr.

What other effects would you guys add for a guy who is not a big "bass" effects guy? I figure I need a Pedalpower for voltage and beyond that I'm open?? Good tuner for bass??

Hey Tapp,

Its always a matter of personnal taste, but here's what I use for a rock format: Tuner, compressor (both a must, I'm told), EHX Bassballs for those crazy funky moments, SansAmp Bass Driver (same function as the bassbone), Chorus, Flanger and noise gate (all Boss except otherwise noted). Next in line: MXR 288 octaver, mostly because of the mid-range switch and sounds better than the Boss unit.

The chorus is always on, using light settings. It still does add a little depth and color. The other effects I use according to my mood and to the song I'm playing, but never for the whole song, only for usually brief passages.

Hope this helps :-)

Cool thanks!

I have a compressor that I use with my guitar rig sometimes so I have that. I do need to get an octaver. Tell me more about the MXR?? Have you heard either the Aguilar or EBS units? Do you use the Boss tuner (white one)? I've been told Korg has a nice pedalboard tuner. I've got a DOD deep freeze chorus I could use too.

Sounds good, keep the ideas comin

I'm mostly a Boss addict. Haven't tried EBS but I'm told by friends it's probably the best in terms of pedals. The demos on the web site sound pretty good anyway. Aguilar ? Haven't looked it up yet. Yes, I use the Boss white tuner (TU-2), 'cuz you can see it !

As for the octaver: all of matter of personal taste of course, but I tried the Boss OC-3and actually hated the way it sounds, distortion, octave and all. The poly mode sounds ok, but didn't feel like paying 150 $ for a gadgets that has all sorts of option but only one appealing to me.

MXR: it's analog (sounds warmer), has 2 octave voices for added range and a nice mid-range switch, that will help your bass cut through when playing in bands. Look up the Dunlop site, there's a lot of info and sound demos on it, so it will give you a pretty good idea and you'll know if it's your cup of tea :-)

The Korg Pitchblack is what your referring to. Very good pedal, can cost a little less than a TU-2 if you look hard enough. Also, IMO it is much easier to see when on a dark stage, or a bright one. Also has the daisy chain that the TU-2 has so you don't miss anything.

Also it's sleek and black and very sexy :P
