Help with Two Overdrive/Distortion Tones! (Spock's Beard/Circa Survive)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys there are two tones I'm trying to come near for my rock/metal band.

My gear is a Rick 4003/Sadowsky MV5 through an Orange Terror Bass 500. I have limited fx, my only current fuzz/od is an MXR bass blowtorch. I'm new to using distortion/od/fuzz. If you can tell me a pedal or pedals that can cop these tones I'd be pumped!

The first is Circa Survive's new record BLue Sky Noise. There is tons of awesome bass distortion. I read an interview where the bassist said he used a ProCo rat. I've read that these do not work well on bass without a blend. Is this true? Is there another pedal that can get a similar tone that includes a blend?

This is the best example of this tone.

The other is the tone of Dave Meros of Spock's Beard, specifically on the albums V and Snow. I know he used a modded Ric with J pickups, but the only info I can get on his effects is that he used some Digitech multibox. I really am only interested in getting his frequently used mid level distortion sound, such as this

If you're familiar with Spock's Beard, the intro to "At the End of Day" off of V is probably the clearest example of the tone I'm looking for but I couldn't find a youtube video of the studio recording.

Any help with these would be greatly appreciated!

the circa tone is definitely a rat. sounds to me like a vintage rat w/ the LM308n chip. those handle bass well enough to be used without a blend and can be had for around $120 here in the classifieds.

Find an old big box reissue Rat, send it to be modded by our own rratajski, and enjoy your new secret weapon.
