Sound recordings may not help much- compression is mostly just an adjustment of levels, a volume control. The Demeter does "fatten" my sound a bit, but it's subtle. Here's a test to see if it's working: turn it off, and set your bass and amp so that when you hit a loud low note it causes the amp to clip a little. Then turn the Demeter on, set the knobs to 12:00 (just as a starting place) and see if it stops your signal from clipping the amp.
