Is a hematoma what I'm looking for??

Hey guys,

In my quest for finding the right overdrive that suits my Thumb bass and Ashdown rig, I've moved from an MI Audio Tubezone (great sound, but low B too compressed, and was a pain getting any kinda unity gain/vol balance etc) to a Sans Amp PBDDI.

The Sans Amp is cool but doesn't give me the warmth I'm after in an overdrive, plus I'm finding its giving me too much of a midscoop on any setting...

I'm after a simple middle of the road overdrive, which can go from a mild grit to something fairly crunchy. I like the idea of having a boost to add flexibility to both clean and OD sounds. Is the Hematoma what I'm after? I tried one breifly the other day and it seemed on the money - but interested to see what other tb's might be able to suggest.

I like mine a lot - certainly went through enough other ODs to know it's my fave SD-1/tubescreamer type OD for bass. It definitely won't scoop your mids. Some folks complain about the rolled off highs, that's a matter of taste but i'll admit I keep the tone pretty high.

Without the pre/boost engaged, you may find it tricky to dial in any kind of light/dynamic OD. I generally prefer the tone with the pre engaged, and it is useful as a "clean" boost, even with just 5db

but the strength of the hematoma is really its high gain OD sounds. I have to admit I often think of getting a Barber LTD SR for lighter OD. Dang.

I have one and like it. It does roll off the highs and it imparts its own character but it is very nice sounding and keeps the bass frequencies well. I tend to put the preamp on at a really low volume with the overdrive at minimum so I just brown up the sound a little. However, that makes the two footswitch setup redundant as turning the preamp off makes it really loud (there is LOADS of gain in there if you want it).

It works better as a high-gain, dark sounding pedal for doom and gloom but I'm not so into that.

One thing I like about it is that it feels quite fast and doesn't sponge up the sound too much even at higher gain.

I really like my Hematoma. I think it would work pretty well for what you're describing. I'm constantly impressed by the range of tones that I can get out of it; everything from really light grit up to heavy overdrive that verges on fuzz. Right now I'm using it for a medium-gain snarl, running it into my Tech21 VT Bass.

Cool thanks guys, sounds like its what I'm after! I want something reasonably grunty, so i'll pull the trigger...I may keep my Sans Amp for the lighter tones...and get a EH BBM for the heaviest...
