I love octavias on bass. My guitarist has an Octavio, I'll have to try that one. My go to Octavia is the Voodoo Lab Proctavia, but when we compared the two on guitar at least, the Octavio had better low end and an alltogether more ballsy fuzz. Really out there!

The real ones used germanium transistors, which can differ greatly from pedal to pedal. So, find one you like and latch on to it. Germanium transistors vary widely and some of them don't sound that good, especially when they are hot. I would bet that the newer ones mostly use silicon, which may or may not sound as good to your ears.

I have one and love it on guitar, it's almost hard to turn off sometimes. It's a real glitchy sounding pedal with all sorts of weird overtones, sputtering and fuzzing all over the place. It really likes to be in front of a smoking hot tube amp or another overdrive pedal to sound its best. It's almost like it's a musical instrument of its own.

On bass it's not so good because it really favors the higher notes of a guitar. It does not track on the low notes that well so it loses all of its magic on a bass. You can only really notice the fuzz and not the octave up effect because of this. And the fuzz is kind of crappy sounding on bass.

Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth uses one and has done for a long time.
