Herbie Hancock´s Rock it bass sound

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,
A quick one, anyone know wich particular effect can you use to emulate the sound of the synth bass of that "Rock it" tune. I prefer the cheap ones, in order to buy one, like a digitech BSW or something. But, as we said here, you can´t ask an elm tree for a pear.
Thanks

It's pretty vanilla... I'm thinking a thick compressor, a pick and some palm muting is about as much as you need. Maybe a very, very subtle and fast attack envelope if you were getting really pedantic. All the synth pedals on the market are geared towards much more extreme sounds.

PS: I don't know any Herbie fans that actually like that song, including me.

I think a compressor with a short, sharp attack is all you really need.

I love it. It still makes me want to fail at breakdancing.

You kidding? That was the best breakdancing track ever recorded, with a killer groove and a hard-to-match blending of strictly robotic concept with actual melody. Every other techno dance track wishes it was as good as Rockit. I've bought a number of other "crossover" records by Herbie and they were all terrible duds- the only stuff I can listen to from him is the straight old-school jazz, and Rockit.

Mmm I think I´ve got to listen to it again, I believe it was a synthy sound...
I´m not the biggest Herbie fan, but I like most of his records, including the first ones, and for me, Rockit is incredible. I´m now doing powermoves over a cardboard in a tube station, while I´m writing this.

I think its just a bass and maybe a keyboard bass played together. Bill Laswell played on and produced the record as far as I know. He usually uses a fretless P Bass with PJ pickups which he sometimes D tunes. It could also be a sample as Herbie was right into his Fairlight and Emulator keyboards when he made this record. Its hard to say.

Meanwhile, here's a great live version.
