Holy tone suck Batman!!! (EHX Russ. Big Muff)

So I found the culprit of my lackluster feelings with my DB750.

------Skip down to pass the long winded part------

I remember plunging straight into the head and thinking this is the best bass tone I have ever heard.

Then I bring my pedal board in and am not felling my tone too much (everything is usually bypassed). I just assumed it was the wireless.

Went today but excluded the wireless. Same thing, just was not hearing the punch and cut from before.

So I plugged straight in... amazing tone!!!!! So I tried the pedals out, one by one.

------------End of the long winded part------

It was the EHX Russ. Big Muff. It seems to cut a lot of the highs, clarity, and punch.

Anyone else have this problem. Or is mine just a bad one?

How big is your pedalboard?

Also, did you try a fresh battery?

Not big...

I have the EHX using a battery snap that converts it so I power it off the DC Brick.

I know it is not the Ibanez CS9. I didn't bother with the Aguilar because I heard the difference when a/b'ing just the EHX in the chain.

Is it because I'm not using a battery?

A standard Russian big muff may not be True bypass.
I'm not 100%, but a lot of the older muff's weren't.

EDIT: Battery doesn't really matter that much.

If it's not; it is an easy mod, and pretty cheap.
There's heaps of pages online to find, about modding big muff into awesome.

Thanks. I will probably get down some time and just make it true bypass.

That should fix the problem.

from what i hear, the russian bug muffs generally have horrible tone suck and a common mod is to give them true bypass

My old Ibanez Tube Screamer was NOT true-bypass, but the buffer actually made my bass slightly clearer to my ears (AB'ing it plugged in and unplugged). I used to have it in my signal-chain but turned off anytime I used alot of pedals to counter all the extra cable loading. Unfortunately many pedals that have buffered bypasses like that don't do it as well (ex- Boss, older EHX)...

Yeah that pedal was made with some cheap parts back when. There are tons of cools mods people have done to them. And yet, the actual effect tone is really nice!

I recently modified a Russian BMP to true-bypass. It's not too difficult. I wrote it up here: http://omgelectronics.tumblr.com/pos...an-big-muff-pi

The pedal definitely sucks some tone when off. I'm much happier with mine having done that. I actually replaced the pots at the same time (which took reaming the old holes a bit), which may or may not be contributing to the pleasing result. By all accounts, the existing pots are poor.
