home brew effects

I'm interested in designing my own effects pedals. I like to fully understand what I'm doing when I work on a project, so I was wondering if anyone knows of any resources that go into the theory behind effects (i.e. why and how they work). Technical readings are no problem because I have a background in electronics, just not in this area. I'm interested in working from the ground up, not working off of already designed schematics.
Thanks.

We get similar questions about once a week, it would pay to search first! Mecca = diystompboxes.com. geofex.com has good techo explanations. Both sites link to virtually all of the other good diy sites and other resources.

Good to know there are people up for making there own. Played with an awesome prog metal band called Jackie Treehorn in Scotland and there's alot of DIY pedals (and music) around the area we played. Can't remember what any of them were but the one's I heard were awesome, very cool scene up near Stirling, not that I can imagine many people going to Stirling just to see a gig...

Thanks, I actually did search and checked out that page, but I must not have been looking correctly at it. I'll take another look.

Browse the forums at diystompboxes for the best info.

geofex is kinda hard to navigate, but do a "site:" type google search and you'll find what you want.

You didn't specify whether you'd be doing digital or analog effects, but if you go the digital route I would suggest DAFX: Digital Audio Effects. It's pretty good at describing some basic DSP techniques for most common effects. These articles at Harmony Central also give basic explanations of effects and some simple DSP implementations. There's a few analog implementations there as well, but they leave a lot to be desired.

For theories, you should check www.geofex.com, www.muzique.com, www.ampage.com. If you want to hang out with the experts (Like Bjorn from BJF and Marc from Skreddy Pedals fame) and check out some boutique circuits, check out www.freestompboxes.com.
