HomeBrew Bajo Mos or something else?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want a simple boost for my pedalboard, and to boost the output signal of my passive jazz and precision basses. The Bajo Mos looks cool, it's bass specific, and at $99 it's a good deal. Anything else I should look at. I don't want distortion or any kind of clipping.

Believe it or not, the EH LPB-1 is a great, virtually eq neutral clean boost. You can get one for about $40 brand new... Some folks have posted that it is a "dirty" boost in these pages, but I recently did a frequency analysis that largely debunked that myth. If anything, there is slight high-frequency attenuation at extreme boost settings - but then it doesn't sound like you need to go that far anyway!

Other popular (albeit more expensive) clean boosts that work great on bass:
Xotic Bass RC Booster (gives you some eq as well if you desire)
Catalinbread Serrano Picoso (smallest form factor)

Remember - any boost pedal can cause clipping (down the signal chain) if you crank it too much!

I was thinking of the LPB-1, but the other two are a little too expensive for a boost. Now it's between that and the Bajo Mos...

I know that, I just want to avoid unwanted clipping at a little above unity gain.

rc bass booster will really make those basses sing though.

it can be used for sound rather than boost only, granted it is a lot more money

I bet it can, but I can't justify $200 for a boost. If I did get a tone shaper with a volume control, I would get the Linden EQ most likely, seems like it is a little sweeter sounding.

I have the Bass RC Booster & it is amazing. Based on what the op says he's looking for, I don't think he needs to spend that much however. For "simple", I really think that the LPB-1 is the way to go. It's true bypass, low noise, relatively compact and a great value. I really see no reason to drop an extra $60 for the Bajo Mos. I could see paying a little more for the Serrano Picoso, if you need to save space though... (but it's more like $120 or so).

Ok thanks, any noise problems with the LPB-1?
