hooking up compressor

Sign in to disble this ad
A buddy of mine gave me a DBX 166xl compressor and i have no idea where to plug it in. I'm using an Ampeg svt 4 pro. Would i go into the effects loop? I've never experimented with compressors before. I've been reading bongo's FAQ on the subject, i just have to get past the initial set up and then i think i'm fine. Thanks.

Yes, effects loop. Have fun, lots of options with that unit.

And Send (mono) would be the proper jack in the effects loops area of the amp?

Send --> comp in
comp out --> return

If there's a blend, set it at 100% wet (at first); if there is a switch for series/parallel, set it to series.

If you're using other effects, you may want to try the compressor at different places in your chain. I run my bass directly into my compressor (a rackmount, line level comp), and from that out to my effects, into the input on my amp. It sounds a lot better than running the effects into the compresser in the effects loop, although that was definitely easier to set up for gigs.

On of your other options i believe would be to run your bass into the compressor helping to even out those note volumes, then into the effects....from there into a limiter to help tame the effects if your finding it hard to balance the levels and then finally into the amp

Dunno how feasable this is but that is how i would imagine it to run if you wanted to really keep your sound tight without having to lose some of the fuzz/overdrives and such which rely on pushing the volume to the valves?

BigLongy... Maybe after you've actually used a fuzz pedal or a tube amp or a compressor, then offer advice.
