Hopefully, a simple 1-Spot question

Sign in to disble this ad
About the only adapter that the 1-Spot power source doesn't have is for 18v pedals (if they make one, I missed seeing it) - Voodoo Labs does have a Y-adapter (two 9-v leads merging into a single 18-v plug). My question - will the Voodoo adapter work on a 1-Spot-powered daisy chain?

I personally don't see why not. I always gathered that the Y-adapter takes two parallel voltage sources and combines them into series to add them. I didn't think there was anything special about it.

If your intention is to get 18V out of a single 9V supply, then it won't work, no matter what cable you use.

The reason it works on a Voodoo labs is due to the isolated outputs. A 1-spot has one output, you cannot wire it in series with itself!

That makes sense. I thought I read somewhere that it would work, but I wasn't totally sure how, given the reasoning you just listed.

Thanks!

Yeah, unfortunately the 'net has just as much bad information as it does good!

There are alternatives for getting 18V from 9V, they're called "charge pumps", but they have their own set of issues and can be expensive.

Only if you use 2 1-Spots... 2-Spots??

I second the charge pump thing. Just remember, it will double the amount of current draw. If your pedal draws 35 mA, it would draw probably over 70mA with the charge pumps circuit drawing a smidge too.

2 One-Spots should do the job. I'd be very surprised if the internals prevented this, but it's possible. I'd check with a voltmeter; stick one lead into the core of OneSpot 'A' then measure to both contacts of OneSpot 'B'; in both cases the DC voltage reading should go quickly to zero.
