Hotcake or Sex Drive?

Sign in to disble this ad
They're both overdrives... but, different. I have an opportunity to buy a Sex Drive now or I could wait a couple of weeks and pick up a Hotcake when a delivery arrives at my local pro shop.

Whaddya all think I should do?

Edit: I realize that it's likely very few of you have actually used either of these pedals.

I happen to think the Sex Drive is the shizznit, one of the best tone machines out there. But I haven't tried the Hotcake, so honestly I'd recommend you buy both and then give us the A/B lowdown.

I wish I could buy both... but my business has taken a bit of a nose dive since August and I'm actually starting to depend on gig money to supplement my income. (I used to be able to spend all my gig money on gear.)

I was wondering when somebody would call me out on that!

I do love the hotcakes...

Bongo, you said that the SD focuses or tightens up the lowend slightly upward... is that why you run the Fromel Shape after to add back some low?

And... Din, what's your experience of low-end loss on the SD?

Thanks!

I only tried it in a shop... with a Jazzmaster... into a fender super 'verb.

BUUUUTTTTtt... it seemed to add some lows to the guitar, so i can imagine it would work well with bass.

I'm sorry i can't help much

I would'a tried it on bass, but there were some gospel dudes tearing up 5 and 6 string basses in the bass section and i got intimidated

No, I use the Fromel for my "vintage amp tone", where it rolls off the highs, gives a nice wide hump in the low mids, and gradually tapers off the lows.

I have more or less decided the low-end attenuation of the SD is a good thing for the sort of context where I'd want a tight, smooth, articulate, edgy tone. There are other pedals I choose for when I want a deeper, fatter tone. But since the SD just turns down the lows a tad, and doesn't cut them off, you certainly could use an EQ pedal to bring those lows back up.
