How can I do what I'm currently doing with the EHX SMMH.. but in a smaller box?

Sign in to disble this ad
Currently trying to reduce the footprint of some of my pedals to fit in more dirt on my pedal board (rat tail.. hmmmmmm...), and am looking at maybe letting the EHX SMMH go. It's a great pedal but I am not using half of its features at all, and always get confused when I turn a knob and it doesn't do what I expected

What I'm using on the EHX:

- Reverse Echo for wild sounds (and seldom, for intros/outros)
- Tap Tempo with the 300ms echo setting while the pedal is off, to engage it later at the right tempo

... and that's about it. I don't think the DD-7 was out already when I bought the EHX, and the DD-6 had been discarded quickly due to annoying way you had to engage the pedal to set the tapped tempo. But now that the DD-7 has an external input for a footswitch (which I could leave off the board), the tap tempo issue is solved.

So, is the "Reverse" setting on the DD-7 something similar to the reverse echo on the EHX?

Any experience of people with both pedals? Could someone confirm that the DD-7 has most of the features, but is smaller and easier to use? I don't need to store presets and whatnot either. And I don't like when things are too complicated

Thanks

Aftera few hours of research, I also stumbled on the TC Flashback. It seems to also have a reverse feature, as well as strum tempo which could be insteresting (but it doesn't seem like you can set the tempo while the pedal is off)

Any opinions on those two (DD-7 and Flashback) to replace the SMMH?

I've owned both the DD-7 and the SMMwH and I currently use the SMMwH. I would say that the reverse echo setting on the DD-7 can get close (if not the same) to the SMMwH, albeit with the SMMwH having more control over the sound.

The controls on the DD-7 are much more straight forward than the Memory Man, and the knobs do more of what you'd expect them to. I decided to keep the SMMwH because I didn't have to set up the tap tempo every show (mine was off the board as well) and because it had presets. I miss being able to make the DD-7 self oscillate as much and as easy as it did. I'm probably going to get another analog delay for that reason soon, as the SMMwH doesn't really do that sound very well.

Here is a mini review that I did on the DD-7 some time ago, if it helps:

thanks! I'm leaning towards the boss unless someone convinces me otherwise. I also perused a few guitar forums (sorry..), and the DD-7 seemed to be more appreciated than the Flashback

What about taking the guts out of the SMMH and re-housing it in a smaller box?

I'm guessing the DD7 gets more love than the flashback because it is around longer, distributed more widely, and therefore more people own it.

I use the TC Nova repeater, which costs only a bit more than the flashback and is just a bit larger (and definitely smaller than the DD7 + expression pedal), and I'm very happy with it. It has a dedicated tap-tempo swith with a choice of strumming or tapping, and you can definitaly set the tempo while the pedal is of. It does have reverse delay too, and a ton of other features.

Maybe only disadvantage: it does suck a lot of power, so I'm using it's own wallwart, plugged into a power strip that it mounted on my board.

Another +1 for the DD-7! I use to own not one but 2 EHX SMMwH but he volume drop issue was too much for me. Switched to he DD-7 and LOVE it! Has 6.4 digi-delay seconds, DM-2 mode (which I've A/B'd and sounds 99.99%) , much more controllable oscillations and easier, and overall much more useful looper and built in tap-tempo (even though I use a small tap-tempo box).

Just got my DD-7. Couldn't be happier. its the one pedal I've always wanted. You can find them cheap to! (got my DD7 and stomp box for 120. DD has the nice Loop in it (up to 40 seconds) pre-set delays of 50, 200, 800 and 3200ms i believe. Gets an awesome sound out of the modulate with my CH-1 and CE-2 on at the same time ;D The Analog is a very nice sounding echo. And of course the Reverse is just plain old awesome! heres the reverse set at E.Level:2oclock F.back 1oclock. Dtime 11:30. Josh's bassline - YouTube

Not the best playing, And the Amp had to be turned down as it was10ish when i recorded (I live in an apartment.) But it sounds SO much better when turned up!

The best thing to do is go try these pedals out though!

Trying to think of what reverse effect by Boss i have heard, i do remember it was not very impressive. That was with older Boss pedals.

The Hardwire DL-B has a looper and Delay with reverse.

one of the better reverse effects i have heard was in the Hardwire RV-7 reverb. yes reverb i know, but its more of a diffusion delay for reverb not just a hard delay line with feedback. to me it sounds more interesting and smoother, good for slow half time fill ins and what not.

Boss has better wet/dry control for getting super washed out delay, not really good for live stuff, more just having fun at home, overall i think for normal playing the hardwires sound better.

everyone is different its better to hear them for yourself before spending the cash.
