How can I get this Dist-tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi
Guys I am looking to buy a DI with OD/Distortion. My target tone is this (intro):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9GuhlhlMtM

Can you plz tell me what can get me this growling grinding tone? I am currently looking at Sans Amp BDDI. Do you think it can get me this? My current setup is Yamaha RBX 375 > Line6 Bass POD XT Live > Band PA or venue PA (I am from Pakistan, ad virtually all gigs happening here have house PAs!), and I ws hoping if I could just plug the DI into the Pod XT and into the board.

Ive been trying to get the tone out of PodXT, but somehow it doesnt really give me that much grind without killing the low end or becoming too treble-hefty any higher than the low A. Plz advise me what to get. Budget not decided yet. Thnx!

i think that tone is generated more by an active bass like a ernie ball stingray or sterling. that's the first thing that comes to mind but i'm betting you might be able to get a somewhat similar sound with a overdrive/di pedal with a blend knob like the mxr m-80.

Haha I know what u mean. This kind of aggressive tone almost automatically sends a Sterling alert to the head (at least to mine!). But I dont really think its absolutely necessary to have an EBMM in ur hand to get there. FYI my current Yamaha is also dual humbucker with active 2 band pre onboard, I think it should (loosely) put it in the same category as a Sterling!

Secondly I can get the "somewhat similar tone" from Bass POD XT Live. But it doesn't quite do it justice. Please do suggest some more pedals, and even post samples if u can. Thanks!

I believe there are BDDI and M-80 soundclips in the wiki.

It sounds to me like you really need to blend a clean signal in to get that sound. That will give you the clarity and low end.

@bongomania: Dude could you please provide a link to them? I dont really know what u are referring to.

@MuzikMan: Hmm.. Interesting. I ws kind of thinking on the same lines. But I dont think Bass POD XT Live offers bi-amping options. Any other options?

At each brand-name section linked there, scroll down until you see the model name/number of the pedal you're interested in.

The English Muff'n is a well-loved pedal around TB. Do a search and read all about it.
