How can I get this fuzz tone? (youtube link inside)

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently joined a Drum & bass band, and we plan on covering this song. On top of that I am in love with that saw-tooth fuzziness on the bass line and I MUST get it somehow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJvVHAh_INM

just a random video on youtube featuring the song, the fuzz starts at 0:49 and isn't throughout the song, but it's still awesome...

I've been wanting a new fuzz pedal for a while, what would you suggest so I can nail that sound?

thanks for any replies.

(P.S. I might be wrong calling it "saw-tooth" but I'm pretty sure my definition is correct...)

That tone is sick, likewise I'm envious. I've never heard a bass make that sound, are you sure it's not just synth'd on the computer? I know mixing software can make those drawn out beats.

Knowing Royksopp reasonably well, its definitely just a synth. As for getting that tone from a bass, I wouldn't recommend just a straight fuzz, no matter how gated it is. There's definitely some kind of FM or filtering going on too. I'd probably recommend either a Copilot Orbit in one of the more splattery settings, or maybe a Crowther Prunes and Custard.

wow, that's pretty close, and that's pretty much how I'd expect the effect to sound. I really need to check one of those out.

Yeah I kinda thought it was a synth, but it's fun to to to mimic synthy tones on a bass. And I'll have to look up the Copilot Orbit and a Crowther Prunes and Custard.

Thanks again for the replies.

It alomost sounds like a phaser on that fuzz tone too. I could be crazy. Maybe try a phaser and a gated fuzz just for fun
