How Do I Get A Filthy Bass Tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I love the bass tone of Nothingface, especially Filthy and Bleeder. What amp settings and bass tone could I use/combine to get this? I don't have any effects. I have a 5-string Schecter Stiletto Custom-5 and a Fender Rumble 15 amp, if that helps.

Hard to do when you're 17 and can't get hired anywhere.

Don't worry about the amp, although you do need a distortion pedal like the electro-harmonix big muff or something along those lines.
Try ebay if you are broke.

Digitech bass overdrive distortion has an excellent range and control with a blend control.

I can also vouch for the digitech, one caveat with that pedal is; buy the wall adapter (unless they started including it) because I made the mistake of not buying one and running on a 9v battery and the battery was dead within two days.

TRUE, digitech pedals gobble the life out of batteries . The wall power adapter is a must.

You can get a Digitech BP80 multieffect pedal new for 70 bucks from guitar center. I have one and it has many usable fuzz's and overdrives. If you get one and need some help with it pm or email me and I will help you out. I have had mine for years and have played with all sorts of sounds and think I can get just about any sound desired out of it. I will listen to my Nothingface albums and see what I come up with.

I have a bp80 . It was good one I mastered it. But I'm a bit showy so prefer 10 awkward pedals over one simple one. But it is a good cheap way to get multiple effects. The wah is good as well.

Although this is a smart ass comment there is some truth to it. You have a more than serviceable bass and an amp that is little more than a toy.

If you want to go the pedal root and get a nice dirty tone get a Sansamp bass DI and save up for a 1X15 or 2X10 combo with some actual power. A Carvin in the $350 range might do it.

you need to build your sound from the ground up. try and save for a good amp, it will do more for your tone than buying individual effects pedals.

Ditto sans amp DI. It has overdrive and tone adjustments that can be used or bypassed like a stomp box. Every bass player should have a DI at some point as an option when you need to patch into a PA and sometimes built in amp DI's have noise or ground issues.

That is no excuse for bring broke. Go out and create money-making opportunities. Mow lawns, rake leaves, wash cars, sweep floors, donate blood. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere and have no neighbors, chances are you can create income within walking distance. I made $7/hr working on a farm when I was a teen. It wasn't always fun, but I had spending cash.

And then the next time some snarky forum member gives you a useless answer, you can fire back with..."Which one, jack knob?" while counting your cash.
