how do you make a vt bass deluxe "transparent"

I know you can bypass it, but what I'm wondering, other than running the lows, mids, and highs at 12 oclock, where would the character be set to get as close to a dry sound as possible?
I'm looking for a good starting point to make subtle changes in my tone. So far, everything I've tried is a drastic change.

+1 if you want transparent, the VT is the wrong tool.

I've started using mine as more of an overdrive recently. crank up the character and bass to 3ish, roll off the level a little and everything else 12. Keep in mind I am actually making the pedal and my amp's EQ work together, I have Bass quite high, Mids the same, and hi's around 12.

Definitely not a transparent pedal, and is not meant to be. Awesome as a tone shaper though.

Yeah, sorry OP - the VT is not at all a transparent pedal. It is an Ampeg emulator. It will give anything "its" voice (that voice being an Ampeg amp)

I had a love/hate relationship with it as well and for a while and was going to sell it, until I realized I was kind of using it wrong (from my perspective) and expecting something from it (of which it was not necessarily intended). I bought it because I loved the grindy tone of it at higher drive settings. As a standalone OD (kicked on for specific parts of a songs) it was too different of a tone from my starting tone.

I pulled it out again after quite awhile, and found settings that sound awesome as an always on pedal. It is now a huge part of my tone choice.

awesome. i wish i had the deluxe, as I've found several cool settings, its hard to settle on just one as it's my always on pedal aswell. all sort of depends on who im playing with.

You could have a blend mod done by Putnam but yeah, ultimately if you're looking for a transparent preamp the VT is the wrong tool.

If you want transparent tone shaping you should try something like a Boss or MXR graphic eq pedal.
