How do you set up a compressor? (DBX 166A)

Sign in to disble this ad
I received my compressor two days ago and have played with it, it sounds ... interesting. Actually I like it.

What type of setting would you recommend for a modern rock setup?

This model is a DBX 166A, but I suppose a general how to would be great.

Thanks!

I suggest you do some reading on how a compressor works and learn how to find the sound you want, but generally it should be hard to notice

Think of a compressor as a device that automatically pulls down the volume fader as you play harder. The result is that your notes are more consistent in volume.

That said, you really have to listen and feel the compressor's effect. Then you will be able to find a setting that works best for you.

Not to mention attack and decay times, although I don't know if they are on the 166A.

For more specific (but not too specific) directions, check the FAQ in my sig.

What would you advise me to start with as far as threshold, ratio, attack, release, etc?
