How do you use your phaser in a band setting?

Hi, I'm gasing for a phaser, but I don't know how it will be particuarly usefull. I can think of a bunch of examples for guitar phasing, but not bass.

Thin Lizzy is one "classic rock" example, they often had phaser on the bass; Muse and many of the other modern alterna-metallish-rock bands use phaser among many other effects.

I like it as a subtle "flavor" just for a slightly different voice than usual. Goes with anything, and I mean anything- jazz, metal, heck even blues.

hmm... I think you're right bongo, phasers could be implemented in different situations out of the box. And if your band members get out of line...

Juan from the Mars volta uses his Phase 100 in some songs.

I guess when using a phaser and even a flanger, it's got to be a slow-ish song. For instance, 46+2 by Tool. One of the best examples of a modulation effect by bass in a song.

Oh and phasers work great with slap

Sounds interesting, what are some Thin Lizzy songs with phaser used on bass? I'm not exactly an expert on 'em. I used to think of Phaser as a "funky" effect of sorts.

I sort of agree with chronicle about the slower songs. When I think of phasing, I think the guitar in Led's No Quarter. I see how you could put it in some other contexes. I'm gonna have to try some slap though, never heard of that combo.

Isn't there a phase effect on the bass in Jailbreak or is that a different effect?

Waitin For An Alibi by TL has phaser on the bass I do believe, or it might be flanger, I always get confused

Slow phasers work great for two handed tapping stuff and a slightly faster phaser with some auto-wah can funkifize your slap tone.

I use phaser the same way I would use chorus. For when the music just needs that little "extra". I find it to be more effective when my notes are held for longer and are farther apart.

I always thought that was a flanger. Sounds a bit too gloopy to be a phaser.

I use it in one song where I have the rate full on and the Resonance knob pegged and play with a pick. With just the right rhythm (thank you click track!) it makes a really crisp choppy tone that replicates the synth line originally written for it. I'll be playing with it to get more use out of it but for the time being it saves me from having to shift sliders on the Microsynth for at least ONE song.

I press on the switch and if I like the change, I leave it on.

I leave it on a lot.

Occasionally it muds my sound on stuff where I hang on my low B a lot, but it usually sounds pretty good. I like it better than a chorus or flange, but that's just me.

+1 to Juan's use of one. The song Goliath off of the Bedlam In Goliath has a great example of a phaser on bass in the song. (correct me if I'm wrong.)

or not... i used a Phase 90 because it has a smaller phase range, helping to keep the low and high end present, and only just phasing a decent section of the midrange. however, some might prefer other phasers with larger phase ranges. play as many as you can, and buy the one you like the most. get familiar with it's sound and what it does to your tone, and when you're playing a song that you just think needs the phaser, use it!
