does anyone know how Richard Smallwood's bass player (Mark Walker??) gets the fat sound on the CD "Journey"??

It sounds a bit like an octaver, but it's more subtle. The lower octave sometimes gets VERY low. It reminds me a bit of the SubBass plugin in Apple Logic?!
Anyone a clue?
