How is this dude in Pod People getting that tone?

I think it's fuzz, and it sounds muffish to me, but that is my (heavily abused) ears. What say the rest of you? Also, how would I go about copping this possibly? I've been messing about with my setup but maybe i'm doing wrong because I can't seem to almost nail it.

Pod People-Roadblock

It's very pronounced in the very beginning of the song.

Also, this is a pretty cool band, so you should check them out.
