Most o/ds ive used compresses the tone too much, but i totally dig his sound since he has really sweet grind in his tone

That's high treble, low bass eq, active pickups, playing practically ON the bridge and a tube amp (at least that what it sounds like to me).
You could do try that with your setup first.

You can probably get that sound using a tech 21 sansamp bass driver or a tech 21 sansamp paradriver.

I think the Aguilar Agro or Xotic BB Bass would easily cop that tone.

Yeah I agree the VT would work, the bass driver would work, an RBI or an RPM would also work for that tone.

Didn't wanna open a new thread.
How would you get this kind of sound without a fretless, pick or tube amp?
YouTube - Stratus Bass Cover
Playing a MM Sterling H/piezo if it helps.

Think I'm asking for much here, but gotta try

No way you can really mimic a fretless sound. And I'd guess the rest of his sound is just his bass and overdriven SUNN tube amp into a cab with no horn. You could try to mimic it with a warm sounding overdrive with the tone rolled off to kill the high end.
