How is he getting THAT sound?

The bass sound in this song floored me the first time I heard it, and it does to this day. I've always wondered what effect(s) were used to get it; what do you guys think???

That sounds like a fuzz pedal. I'm guessing it might be a big muff.

Yes, likely a fuzz with blended clean tone.
A SansAmp BDDI pushed hard gets this kind of tone.
I'd use a Guyatone TZ-2 with clean blend.
Basically you wnat a pretty intense distortion mixed with clean tone.
I don't know the band but I really like this song.

It's great, isn't it? Electrafixion were a short-lived band with Ian McCulloch on vocals and Will Seargent on guitar before they reformed Echo and the Bunnymen. The album came out in 1995 and is seriously one of my favorite records of all time.

So you think it's strictly a fuzz and clean blend--no delay, flange, chorus, reverb, etc. added in? I bought a Boss ODB-3 shortly after I heard this record, and it comes close, but there's a little something missing.

I just bought a Bass Big Muff, and even using the Dry setting which blends the fuzz with the dry signal, my Boss ODB-3 still sounds closer. The tone has a grind to it that makes me think it's overdrive rather than fuzz. But, there's something else to that sound; I'm really starting to think it's reverb....

Id say a super high gain overdrive or maybe a distortion. I could see the ODB-3 getting close. From clips I've seen id say the boss fuzz pedal would sound good blended for this.

But you think it's strictly overdrive, distortion or fuzz and nothing else? It has a certain wetness that makes me think there's something else, too....

The wetness comes from reverb or some other post isgnal processing.

Reverb is what I've been thinking, yeah.
