How Is He Getting This Tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys,

There's a video of a Battery cover by Metallica, and in it, the guy's tone is awesome! Can anyone recognize the effects he's using, if any, or is it just the Rickenbacker?

He definitely has some dirt in his signal. It sounds tubescreamer based to me, but the sound quality isn't particularly good.

According to the YouTube posts, the bassist in the video said he used a "Boss Overdrive/Distortion" pedal.

Probably a Boss ODB-3 (Bass Overdrive).

Interesting rendition of this song... while he's playing it differently, he has some serious speed!

Thanks so much! I'll look into Boss pedals and products.

And as far as his interpretation of the bass part, it's very interesting. I myself play the triplets too when I play the song, but he does it so effortlessly.

EDIT: I checked out that boss pedal, thing's sick! Thanks a lot Mystic

It's hard to tell with the sound quality, but that doesn't sound like an ODB-3 to me. And again, it might just be the video quality/YouTube compression, but it seems to be cutting lows so I wonder if he's not using a BOSS OS-2

Id go with the Boss ODB-3, seems its adding just a little to the signal, but that could also be the crappy quality, a lot of that is just the classic bitin ric growl!

You know it man, Cliff was such a monster, who knows what he would have gone on to do?

If you hear any of the bass master tracks from Kill 'Em All, Ride the Lightning, or Master of Puppets, they're so impressive

That is not a Rickenbacker in that video. That is a lawsuit copy.

Are you kidding me? Lol that's hilarious. Had me fooled. Then again I don't know a lot about Ricks.
