how to install a dbx 160a compressor in front of my amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a GK 1001 rb2. I want to get that aggressive GK rock tone. The 1001RB-II, with the extra headroom on tap, needs to be turned up quite a bit more to get the nice aggressive growl out of it.
I want to adjust the output level of the compressor so that the clip light on the amp occasionally winks.
So I want to use my compressor to raise the signal to the amp so I can get that GK growl.
I was connecting the DBX from the effects loop of the GK. But this could rob signal.
How can I raise the output level of the compressor???I have to connect the bass to the compressor??

From there, I can adjust the preamp gain of the amp with the "volume" control, and then raise the woofer master for sound level. I was planning to raise the boost control also.

I want to get that natural overdriven tone of the GK.
Thanks

I am currently using a dbx160a with a GK1001RB-II. Right now i have the DBX looped in with my Demeter pre-amp. BUT before i got the pre-amp, i was using the effects loop of the GK in conjunction with the dbx and it was fine. The only signal loss i got was self adjusted when you go into the negative(s) adj(s) of the threshold and output gains of the dba.

I dont think your dbx is going to "bring out" the growl unless your head settings are already "growling"...THEN use your dbx to adj for the sound you want. Try this first it may help.

How so? Can you describe what happened?

Other user of talkbass told me to raise the output gain from the compressor, and increase the boost of the amp and the master (almost to the max), while lowering the volume of the preamp (volume in GK).
Then he realized that all the things you connect from the effects loop of the GK (compressor in my case) would rob signal, so told me to disconnect the DBX. I am confussed.
What I need is to have the GK "hitting the rails" clipping, I want to push it increasing the gain, but without going that loud. I want that overdriven rock tone.
