Hello everyone. I'm a long time reader. figured this would be a good place to jump in on the posting. Anyway. I always seem to have some sort of dirt going, chours or light phase and / or flange. Depends on the song really

When you say "pedals" does this include any kind of processor i.e. limiter, preamp, etc.?

The only pedal I ever use is my Boss DD-3 Delay Pedal. Oh the amazing things you can do with it.

I use a digitech multi-unit. I have my chorus sound.. my octave sound.. various others depending on the song. But I like a good clean sound too.

You'll get a fairly unbiased result by polling in the Effects forum.

I use compressor, eq, tuner and distortion. All pedals because almost any gig I do (which is 4-5 a month) involves buses, trains and at least 30 minutes of walking carrying all my kit (and I need to stash it all under my desk at work if it's a weekday gig).
  • Always on : The compressor sounds nice, but mostly gives a lot of relief to people who's amp I'm using that it'll never get louder than THIS.
  • Always on : The eq is amazing and helps me get a bass sound I love, regardless of the different rigs I'm using (there's some very nasty amps out there! ).
  • The distortion is very cool when it's required! I play in several different bands from Indie rock to mellow and 'chilled'. All of them require distortion at some point (different types for different mood changes).

since the people in this pool are visiting the effects forum i believe the results will not be accurate... i say over 80% will be playing more than 2 pedals

I use effects if I play guitar or electric keyboards, but believe in good clean bass tone!

I have even played my Double Bass with no amp - pure tone, nothing in the way - a great feeling!

I run a good "clean" bass tone 75% of the time. Still, my board, (hangin' on with 11 individual pedals), always has 2 pedals running.

the heart of my rig, and what i try to make the core of my playing sound, is just bass -> preamp(db680) -> poweramp(qsc plx 3002) -> speakers(4x12 & 1x18).

that being said, i'm really digging the pedal and rack setup i have now. a lot, in fact - i'm just scratching the surface of what i can do. i'll probably never be a "always have 3 pedals on" kinda player but i can see me using the ones i have more and more - the more i experiment with them, the more i dig the results.

Not all pedals stop a tone being 'clean' though, and not all 'clean' bass tone is 'good'.

By far the worst bass tone I've heard came from an otherwise 'nice' bass played by one of the best bass players I know, with no processing at all between pickups and pa (a very good pa!). Compared to the other bases through the same system it sounded like a weak fart on a windy day. Horrible to the point of distracting!

One of the nicest bass tones I've heard came from a £130 musicman copy through a rubbish little PA system - again, no processing at all. Sounded awesome, but could've maybe done with a wee bit of compression to even it out a bit when he got over excited.

I'm just quoting this to enjoy the irony of this comment in light of your user name.
