How many effects/pedals should I get?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have a little problem. My birthday is coming up, which means more cash for bass gear, but I'm not really sure what to get. I've been looking at this bass:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Squier-b...29-i1166455.gc

and I'm not sure whether I should save up for this beaut' or look at some pedals etc. I play a range of styles, funk, classic rock, newer stuff, and some jazz. Are effects important for these styles? And if they are, which ones in particular should I be looking at?

I would say that if you don't already have a fretless, then pick that up as it will open up some new things for you as well as really tighten up your left hand work.

I don't have a ton of basses and all the ones I have are kind of cheap. When I play expensive basses I can tell they are better, but just barely for the money. So for tonal versatility, once you get that fretless taken care of, then it is time to load up on effects!!

That Bass has been reviewed here numerous times. The conclusion seems to be that it is a great value.

What is it you are hoping to accomplish?

What do you like / dislike about the equipment you have now?

and finally, happy birthday

+1 for a solid bass and amp. that is a much better investment than getting effects. however, for the styles you listed, an overdrive and envelope filter would be good choices.

Yes. And at that point the answer to the question: "How many effects/pedals should I get" is always

"One more"

For me it's however many you need plus whichever ones you want plus the ones that other guy's got that sound cool or look cool and that new one that's coming out next month.

Gotta +1 this. No sense buying enhancers before you have the basics completely covered. HBD.

Solid bass. Solid amp. That's first. Then you get pedals when and IF the situation demands it. There is no answer to how many pedals should I get. For one player it's 0, for another it's 30.

Just remember not to get a pedal board. That limits your real estate. Get as many pedals as possible, get to rehearsal early, & spread 'em out.

Don't forget to leave room to hop around.

Wait guys there seems to be a bit of confusion, I have two basses and an amp, with no effects. I'm wondering if I should get effects or this fretless.

But that's a question nobody but you can answer, especially if there's not a concrete "need" for either a fretless or pedals.

You shouldn't get anything unless there is a NEED for it - bass or otherwise.

I disagree. There are many things that I have purchased plenty of things that weren't necesity but opened me up to further exploration.

Oh 20 or so, just don't go and buy the same pedal over and over again 20 times.

Unless you're worried about breaking one. Then buy doubles.
