I was thinking a good replacement would be the Maxon AW-9.
There is a difference in the filter frequency range between the BR-2 and the WR-3 though, so they will not sound exactly the same. IIRC it was 100kz to 2khz for the BR-2.

Personally the DOD FX25 can get very close to it and is more controllable and that's saying something, it will also take the input of hotter basses, personally I thought the BR-2 lacked headroom causing it to distort quite often.

I was looking for something similiar sounding, but not because of being Tool fan (actually fanboy thing stoped after GK amp, i am giging artist, and have to think about my own sound). I am more in hunt for this (starts at 0:35) sound - low, boomy envelope sound, with small taste of grit. I know, that bass player in that band uses BR-2.
First, i was thinking about WR-3, even asked Toolmybass about difference. But still i kept searching, and after i got my Prometheus (bought for different sound), i found very similiar sounds to these on "Hunt Royal" and Tool songs. It needs really much adjusting, but it can go very very close. Tho, i havent ab`ed them.
So, if you need sounds close to BR-2 (close, not exactly same), and you dont want to pay 250$ for one sound pedal, you can try Prometheus.

I've tried to repro it using my 105Q, and - maybe I'm doing it wrong - but I just can't seem to get that deep/kind of a 'woaw' sound with it.
Edit: I can pick a WR-3 up locally for a reasonable price, but I'm more interested in the sound than the brand name.

I already had the WR3 and to get it to sound exactly like the BR2 is you will need an eq or eq pedal in-line or on a separate loop. Simple....have a listen to ANY bass version on youtube that has a bass cover with an auto wah and you will not find one closer to actual studio recorded sound.
I apologize for the sound quality...it was a crap cam b4 i got my HD.
The Pot bass solo at 4:02 of this vid is done with the WR3 and a Boss GEB-7 to compensate the lower end stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_EK442rk60
If that isnt close enough....i have no idea what is.
Oh BTW that sound you hear on Jambi is with way more grit put in with the BR2 to get that sound.
