how much dirt do you have

Sign in to disble this ad
after the how much dirt do you need thread, I was thinking how much dirt do you have on board, I think this would be a better judge of whats really needed and used on a regular basis.

I myself have 5 and going to be 6 once my olc flipster gets here. I have two modded big muffs one being a russian thats set for a really deep heavey fuzz, and a GGG tuned muff for over the top fuzz, a custom pedal thats two lpb1 clones in series, each eq'd differently they can get very fuzz and full sounding, than a bad monkey with a couple caps changed out. and last at this moment is a GGG red llama clone set for a mild overdrivin fuzz. Yes they all get used and have their own particular place on my board. I think everyone should try a red llama it is a very versitle pedal can go from slight tuby overdrive to full on fuzz, all while being very touch sensitive to you volume knob and playing attack.

My dirt comes from my amp.... not that I want it to, though!

Edit: I use quite a bit of distortion from my ME-50B, but not so much that there an absence of definition.

If by "dirt" we're counting drive, fuzz, and distortion, I've got 6 of my 7 effects can make it. 4 are dedicated to it.

2 on my board now with two more off to the side. One more to come. Oh god, that's like 5 total.
Polish Love OD and Prunes & Custard are on the board, as will the Brown Dog be once it arrives. The Fatman and Jekly & Hyde are off to the side now (and for sale!). Too much dirt!

Only 3 here, and they all get used. Nothing too sophisticated:

1) Danelectro Transparent OD
It goes from nothing, to lots of dirt. Nice grunt. I use this for slight overdrive that responds well to playing dynamics. Also for stuff like in "Suck my kiss" by the RHCP.

2) Ibanez Phat Hed PD7. I used it mostly on the clean setting, with the attack switch on "1", for a bit of top end dirt. Nice for some bits in "By the way".

3) Digitech Bass Driver. I don't like this one much, but it does a good very dirty distortion as in "Around the world"

I also have an MXR Bass DI+ preamp pedal that has a very dirty distortion, which I used before the Bass Driver... but now it's sitting there as backup only.

The Danelectro I'm in love with.

Yes, you can guess I play in a RHCP tribute band

I've been yo-yoing between 2 and 6.

I always have an Orbit and an old DOD FX92 Bass Grunge. The occassional ones are an Ibanez Mostortion (TS clone w/para EQ), DOD Punkifier, MXR Blue Box (in various states of disrepair) and a BYOC A-Twin set for Green Ringer. Oh, and I just discovered that my Eventide PF's fuzz sounds awesome when you set fuzz to 11 and blend in just a touch of octaver.

So, 3 and 7 I guess.

Right now I'm using a Fulltone Bass Drive MOSFET and a Triangle-spec Big Muff clone. I rotated out a lot of fuzzes before getting to the Muff clone, though.

I have a ton of fuzz/od. What I actually use... different story.
I settled on...

Devi Bass Fuzz (for mondo fuzz) ran fully saturated (stacked with aenima when needed)
Devi VFM Blended with clean tone (for less fuzz)
Devi Aenima stacked with vfm when I need to get a bit crazy (blended)
Devi Ruiner is my staple for dirt. I usually start using it in a song I know I want fuzz in until I decide on what to use.
I also use that distortion in the Bassballs... don't ask me why I like it, I just do.

Also, I run a Devi OK towards the end of my loop for one song.

keep in mind, my clean tone is dirty (Devi DB + protone bass boost) so I perhaps am not a good example. I dig John Entwistle, what can I say?

None at this point, because my current band doesn't require it. However, I'm still looking for a good overdrive and fuzz, so once that's set I'll have two.

Currently sporting this chain:

EHX Micro POG -> Ampeg Scrambler -> Tech21 XXL Bass Edition -> Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive.

I know the Micro POG isn't a dirt effect but when used with a dirty effect, it really heavys things up.

The Ampeg Scrambler gets pretty gnarly with the texture knob up a bit and with the Sparkle Drive engaged as well, crushes bones.

As for the XXLB, that's pure filth which gets insane at higher gain settings and with a combination of the POG and either the Scrambler *or* the Sparkle Drive is particularly devastating.

All three dirt pedals engaged at once is no good as the feedback is uncontrollable without a pretty brutal noise gate.

I used to go all out on gain having as many as 7 different stages of gain on my board at a time.

Now I use 1, well technically 2.

Aguilar Agro preamp for OD/Distortion
Moog Freqbox combined with the Agro for Fuzz ranging from deep to piercing.

I've found that I can pretty much accomplish anything I need to with my board....I'm real stoked on it.

Lucky man. I had an AGRO on order, only to discover after emailing Dave Boonshoft of Aguilar that they'd discontinued it. A pedal version is due to be out very soon though, so I'm told. No EQ on that though, which is a shame.

By the way, i just checked out the Bongripper myspace page. Sounds immense.

I need only 1, but I prefer 2. Which means that I currently have 7.

Seriously though, all I really need is the B:Assmaster and Pickle Pie B. They do everything and more.

im partial to having two: one mild and warm, and a second one thats really gnarly.

i rather like the sansamp bddi and zvex machine on separate channels. that seems to work for me.

ive also got an assmaster, boss fz-2, catalinbread teaser stallion, and my chunk systems os can do fuzz as well, though im not a huge fan of it for that. the assmaster can do subtle fairly well, but the others seem to like to be very distorted.

edit: oh, i forgot ive got a polish love od as well, but its got a lot of noise, as does the fz-2, so i tend to use it only at home, even though i can put it in its own channel. loud pedals and hissing really bother me.

My Hartke Bass Attack, which is my 'always on' distortion to knit the mix together, EHX Nano Muff for fuzz/wah and ODB-3 for 'SVT/Orange' type OD
