how to nail this bass tone/overdrive?

Sign in to disble this ad
not sure which forum this would be best posted in, but i'm trying to figure out how to EQ my bass and overdrive to get this tone:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJk1Fwes3BI

the bass tone is throaty and punchy, with a slightly overdriven but a very defined tone. kind of has that classic touch n go, shellac, etc sort of bass crunch.

i play a stingray 4 with a hematoma OD through a 4x10 and 1x15 via SWR 400s amp.

any ideas on approaching that sound?

hello, thanks for the link - cool band.
first up I would check you got some nice new stainless steel strings on your bass, they help a lot for that mettalic shine. ( I use dean markley super rounds for what its worth 45-105)

low OD settings on the pedal but perhaps a lot of output gain to hit the input of the swr a bit harder than normal. and / or experiment with the input gain of the SWR a little.

experiment with picking positions just infront of, directly above, or just behind the pick up,

do all these things at loud volumes with a drummer in the room.

the bass player in the video has a jazz bass, which does a lot for that tone, but that middish punchy tone should work well with the music man too.

good luck, hope any of this helps.
