How often does your board change?

Sign in to disble this ad
I must confess my board's been in bits for a few months while I try to replace an LS-2 that was central to it, but in terms of effects I haven't bought anything new for a few months, and can't currently find anything that I think would make a significant contribution to what I do.

It seems - looking at the rapid growth of "Post your pedalboard" threads - that a lot of people here are buying and selling on a monthly basis at least, and it never ends.

So do any of you ever wonder if you're trying for something that's never going to happen, or if you just don't give pedals enough of a chance to find their place in your setup or something? I've only been using effects heavily for a couple of years so it seems weird to see so many old hands still flipping pedals so often.

For me it depends on what kind of jam it is. If it's one guitarist and some light drumming, I go with smoother effects. If it's three guitars and heavy hitting drums, its the assmaster and the fatman....turned to 11....

I generally only change out one pedal at a time, and each one usually gets a few months before getting chucked in favour of something else. I've found the perfect delay, fuzz, phaser, and chorus in my travels, but all the others may come and go until I find The One really.

I usually kept it the same for the most part. Fuzz OD Wah...
Here lately though I have been jamming with a post rock type group so I am getting into more spacey (for me) effects. So it has been changing a good bit. I think that I am two pedals away from finishing...

I hope.

Depends on who you ask.

According to my gas not often enough, there is so much stuff I want but don't have room or need for. Yet.

According to my wallet it has changed too much already and I need to just be happy with what I have.

i have a core setup that hasn't changed for years, but a constellation of pedals that come and go to try and fill certain roles. occasionally, one fits and becomes part of the core setup. right now that is 7 pedals that i will keep in my rig permanently... there are between 2 and 4 pedals i am looking for the right sound...

i definately have certain things that are crucial to my main gig. but my board is very rarely exactly the same for any 2 gigs- even if theyre a week apart.

this is largely due to me having too many pedals in genneral, and no actual board to put them on, just toss 'em in a bag and be on my way to the gig..

What are those seven? OC-2, Mammoth, Moog LPF, Copilot Orbit, Fatman (?), MP201 (?)

Just curious

Well, I just jumped into a band and have had two practices, so I'm still changing my band board around. But once I work out a couple kinks, its gonna be set and stay that way for a while.

My electronic board gets changed around all the time, because it's basically a studio-only board, I only stick them on a board for convenience. So the order gets flopped around basically every track we record.

Constantly and never.

Pedals seem to flow through like water, but the truth is that my actual effect "needs" are pretty meager. For my three main gigs I only need 2-3 pedals for each one which I generally throw in a gig bag with a couple connectors and a godlyke powerall. But I also constantly try to find a single board that I can use for everything as well as for fun. I seem to constantly be reworking it and continue to throw pedals in a gig bag.

I'm hoping I'll actually put it together soon.

I had a pretty static board for about a year, but getting there was about a pedal a month for a while until I got to a setup that fit together well (pedal board synergy? hell yes it was)

Sold most of it, and haven't been playing enough to really have effect "needs" that are dictating my regular board. So, now I'm back to aimlessly cycling through different setups every week or two, trying to remember what I play well with and what gets in my way. This week was a switch from simple (vibe/drive) to crazy robot sounds (bitcrusher/boost/drive/flanger with filter)... real usefull.

I'll probly build a compressor, and EQ/Boost/Buffer, and go with(tuner)>comp>boost>drive... or maybe wah>ratty, nasty fuzz>boost? I think half the time my board gets switched up because I think I should load it with crazy bitcrushing, ring moding, seasick vibrato style pedals and not be so plain and boring.

oc2, mammoth, orbit, noisebox, bugcrusher, moog lpf, fatman... the mp201 is also amazing, so i guess it's 8 that i can't really go without for when i play with effects...

sometimes it's just bass>cable>amp, though...

When I played in a band, it was pretty static (once I found the Warp 9 filter anyway), because I was playing specific songs and I needed specific sounds.

Now that I don't play bass in a band anymore and my bass pedalboard exists only to save me the trouble of setting my pedals up when I need a synthbass line in a recording, I change it around a lot. I'm not really buying/selling pedals for/from it, because I have enough pedals rotating in and out of my noise/mixer setup and mothballs to keep it shifty without needing any new pedals. And I also have so many pedals I want to build so if I have some spare cash for that I'm more likely to do a big order from smallbear than to buy a pedal.

I like the fact my board is constantly evolving. It keeps things from getting stale.

For once my pedaltrain mini is locked down and safe from evolution.

I want to replace the one-spot and line6 adapter with a single T•Rex FuelTank Jr at some point, but that's not a priority.
