How is this signal chain?

Sign in to disble this ad
bass --> ring mod --> wah --> OD --> tremolo --> PRE --> compressor --> noise suppressor --> foot volume --> chorus --> reverb & delay --> foot volume (again) --> amp

I'm really not sure what I'm doing here. Things are just sort of set up so they work, but I'm not sure if I'm losing anything with this semi random set up. By the way, this is more or less how my GT-6B set things up, with a little bit of moving around by me.

I think I should move first foot volume to the beginning, the noise suppressor after the chorus, the compressor after the wah.

I'm not sure where the ring mod and tremolo should go.

What is the "PRE"? I would put the first volume pedal in the closet, it's not needed IMO- but if you have a specific need for it to solve a specific problem, then it should go in the place where it will most directly address that problem. I also hate noise suppressors, but again if you are set on using it because it solves a specific problem for you, then put it in the place where it directly addresses that problem. A great many pedal chain questions can be answered in that way.

got a pic of the board?

the order really depends on what your plan is (concerning pairs of FX being used together)

I'm trying to tweak everything on my Boss GT-6B, so it's really not that interesting to see. It's just the board with an additional two switch footswitch, plus an EB VP Jr. at the end.

Bongo - the PRE is the EQ. The reason I have two VPs is that one is built into the GT-6B, but I prefer the VP Jr. Maybe I'll just stick the built in VP at the end in case I ever remove the VP Jr. from my setup. I'll take out the NS and see if I notice any differences.

Honestly, I haven't found a good use for the ring mod yet, but it makes cool sounds. Most of the effects I have set up on my board for my don't get used when I play for service at church, but I use them when I jam. When I play for service I'll typically only use delay & reverb, chorus, and sometimes a bit of wah and OD.

Don't get me wrong, now.

I love both effects and Jesus. I, however, do not like mixing the two. I have yet to hear a P&W band use effects tastefully (outside of reverb).

Hugs all around.

I actually find it pretty hard to incorporate a lot of effects into P&W music, but I find reverb, delay, and volume pedals to be 3 indispensable effects for me. I use wah in one song, and OD in one song.

I use most of those effects when I'm jamming with my band mates. We play post-rock stuff like This Will Destroy You or Explosions in the Sky.

And sometimes when we go into "free worship", it sounds like post-rock. Aside from what I mentioned above, though, I don't use effects consistently throughout actual songs. I hope that makes sense.

I would personally put your volume pedal either at the beginning or the end...and I don't think you need both. If you're noise suppressor is the Boss NS-2, I'd loop you're OD, Chorus and possibly your ringmod through it because those should be the only pedals giving you noise. I'm assuming PRE is pre-amp...if you get noise through this and it's unwanted, kick it in the noise loop as well. Some people like their wah at the beginning of their chain to wah the clean signal and then go through the chain, and others like to just wah the signal as it comes out of the chain...experiment. I'd put it either after your volume if you put the volume at the beginning, or before your volume if your volume is at the end of your chain. So something like this:

Bass---Volume---Wah---PRE---Compressor---Noise Suppressor---(Loop)---OD---Chorus---Ringmod---(Loop End)---Tremelo---Reverb---Delay---Amp
