How to simulate bass slapping with effects?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I wonder if it is possible to simulate heavy bass slapping just using some pedal effects? I heard that some Bassists do this when recording. Probably compressor or something..?

I am not that good in slapping but would like to get such or a similar tone.

Practice?

I'm sure if you spend enough on effects you can get the sound you want, maybe chorus, envelope filter and a compressor.

Seen some guys emulating it with a pick or by very harshly attacking near the fretboard...

But for what it's worth, you can just as well learn how to thumb da bass .

There are some "slapping" effects out there, however, due to their limited functionality and poor emulation, they remain "that weird effect on my multi-effects pedal that I never used.

My advice, learn how to slap. If you type "bass slap instrucition" on youtube, you're bound to find something.

Yeaz, you're right, got to learn to slap.
I particularly try to learn this "primitive" metal way of slapping like Korn. Well I am not a Korn fan but I think they have an original sound.

I think I got the technique dry wothout an amp but as soon as I turn on the amp it doesn't sound to me. I tried some combinations with boosting the lows and the highs, but I get too much durty klicking noise.. Probably it's the equipment...?

Envelope filter with lots of highs and little to no lows and mids.

It would be best to learn. Trying to emulate it with effects won't give you what you really want, the slap tone. You have to slap to really harness that unique sound.

You can never go wrong with learning a new technique but, if you'r swimming in cash, why not get the FX to just for the hell of it, I would lol. Just don't use it to simulate a technique you don't know because that is just fooling yourself.

I'd recommend practicing as you'll never get the sound as good as you can with practice but one effects trick for slap is using a compression pedal and turning the attack all the way up and pull the threshold all the way down (pretty harsh boxy sound but will sound slap like)
