How to squish my bass (a compression question)?

Hey, guys! I don't really like using compression because it tends to make my bass sound too pretty. I need in a stomp box form comp that will, I guess, give me an awesome squishy, almost legato-esque, sound. It's hard to describe, and since I'm no compression expert, perhaps that's not what I want at all! On my band's myspace (http://www.myspace.com/milkpa) I need a compression guru to listen to 'The Legend Begins.' There is a drum and bass breakdown about a minute and a half in. I need to compress that bassline in order for it to sound right live.

Things you should know:
- I use active electronics ('93 Ibanez ATK300 is my main axe, and I also use a fretless Lakland 55-02 w/ Bart pups and pre)
- My budget is 300-350 range and I don't mind buying used gear.

I've been looking into the Analogman Bicomp because I hear great things, but I don't want to make a hasty decision if it's not what's right for me.

Lots of options, but my first suggestion is the Jacques Fat Burner. You might also dig the T-Rex Comp Nova.
