Hurting Amp with OC-2

Sign in to disble this ad
I wasn't quite sure where to put this and I searched and couldn't find anything.

Is it possible/easy to damage your amp/cab if running an OC-2 (only one octave down) especially on low notes? Or are these things made to withstand these sort of frequencies? Also could it even damage it on high notes due to the harmonics?

Cheers

I suppose it's "possible", sure, but I've never done it, and never heard of anybody doing it.

Ok thanks. BTW I'm using a 4x10 cab.

I got worried as the guitarist in my band has stolen my bass synth wah (I know guitarists...and now I'm looking at buying a new one, surely he should be buying me a new one!!!!). Anyway I think it completely ruined his guitar amp/speaker.

Lots of low bass can damage speakers as some are not built for it. I'd be careful, but I shouldn't imagine it would be too much of a problem - I certainly have never heard of anyone doing any major harm to their gear using an octave pedal.

OK I think I'll just avoid it on the low notes to be safe. I doubt you would be able to hear them anyway.

It's not so much that you wouldn't be able to hear them, as that the OC-2 (and many other octave-down pedals) can't track low notes well, so the best results are achieved by playing higher up anyway.

Blown Speaker

I took out the speaker with the first time rehearsal of my new MXR BOD on the IP112. Of course it was being nailed to the point of distortion.

You just gotta be careful and pay attention to your sound.

Surely having a good compressor after the octave to lame the lows should help aye.

Set up correctly, it could help, yes. A high-pass filter could also help, rolling off the sub-lows a bit.
